Eggo Waffles Recalled After Listeria Scare

Food poisoning can occur with fresh items, like meat and vegetables straight from the farm, or with packaged items that can be purchased frozen or vacuum-sealed. Many individuals do not realize that processed and packaged foods can be as dangerous as fresh foods because the processes the foods go through before reaching store shelves should ideally kill any harmful bacteria. A recent report of listeria being found in packages of Eggo Nutri-Grain Whole Wheat waffles has changed many individuals' perception of the safety of packaged foods.

Only the Nutri-Grain Whole Wheat variety of waffles was recalled. Other varieties and other products from Kellogg Company are safe to eat, the company reports. Kellogg Company voluntarily recalled packages of potentially-affected waffles in September 2016.

Strong>Effects of Listeria

Listeria can cause the following symptoms:

  • Fever;
  • Nausea;
  • Diarrhea; and
  • Muscle aches.

Once listeria infection spreads to the victim's nervous system, he or she can experience the following:

  • Loss of balance;
  • Convulsions;
  • Headache;
  • Confusion; and
  • A stiff neck.

A listeria infection is more dangerous for a child or a pregnant woman than it is for a non-pregnant adult with a healthy immune system. This is because children's immune systems are not yet fully developed and pregnant women's immune systems are compromised. If a pregnant woman contracts a listeria infection, the fetus may die unexpectedly before or after birth. In cases where the fetus or newborn does not die, it may suffer a severe infection. Eggo waffles are a favorite breakfast item for many young children and their mothers, which is why it is so important that any parent who purchased the affected variety of waffles disposes of them and is on the lookout for listeria infection symptoms.

The Eggo Waffle Recall

The packages recalled have a UPC code of 38000 40370 and a “Best By” date of either November 21 or November 22, 2017. They were shipped to 25 states.

There have not yet been any reports of illness associated with consuming this product. Kellogg Company detected the potential for contamination during a routine testing of the product and issued a voluntary recall. This was a proactive effort to prevent any illnesses as a result of the potential contamination. More than 10,000 cases of the waffles were recalled. For more information about this recall, contact Kellogg Company. Individuals who purchased the affected product can contact Kellogg Company for a full refund.
