Millions of Donuts and Other Baked Goods Recalled
Around two million donuts and other baked goods were recalled because of fears of listeria contamination. Major suppliers, including Dunkin’ Donuts, were involved in the voluntary recall.
Although the possible source of contamination was not identified by the FDA, a wide variety of goods was recalled, including rolls, donuts, eclairs, and other confectioneries. If you believe you were injured as a result of food poisoning from this or any other source, contact our Illinois food poisoning lawsuit attorneys right away. Time is of the essence when gathering information about food poisoning lawsuits, so the sooner you act, the more likely your case is to be successful.
What Happens if You Get Listeria Poisoning?
People who come into contact with listeria can suffer from listeriosis, a serious foodborne illness specifically caused by listeria bacteria. Certain people – such as pregnant women, elderly people, and very young children – are at heightened risk of contracting a very serious form of listeriosis, which can include terrible suffering and even death. Symptoms of listeriosis include, but are not limited to:
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Vomiting and diarrhea
- Headaches
- Confusion
- Nausea
- Neck stiffness
- Convulsions
Symptoms typically last one to three days but, in the most serious cases, can quickly become life-threatening. The severity of listeriosis symptoms depends on many factors, so it is important to get yourself checked right away if you are worried your symptoms are indicative of food poisoning.
What Should You Do if You Are Pregnant and You Think You Have Listeria Poisoning?
Although several groups of people are more vulnerable to serious food poisoning illness, pregnant women, in particular, need to take extra caution. Even if it seems like the pregnant woman herself has not become seriously ill because of listeria, the effects of listeriosis on fetal development can be very dangerous.
Listeria can cross into the placenta and infect an unborn baby, who may be unable to fight off the infection. When a baby is born with listeriosis, he or she may develop very serious health problems that need urgent medical care. Lack of treatment can cause lifelong medical problems and even death.
If you are pregnant and believe you may have come into contact with listeria, see your doctor immediately and write down any food you ate and where you ate it.
